Driving In Israel: Car Rental in Israel Guide

Driving in Israel is not only exciting, but it can be challenging as well.

If you are planning to drive and roam around the country, you need to have a lot of patience.

Most of the traffic signs may be in English, but there’s still a possibility of getting lost

If you are from England, you may not be accustomed to driving on the left side of an Israeli car.
Israeli drivers can also be impatient at times; however, you don’t need to worry so much because road rage is actually more common in America than in Israel.

Adding a GPS to your rental car is also allowed so that you can arrive at your destination conveniently and on time. And of course, don't forget that renting your car with Tamir is cheaper and wise thing to do.

Here’s what you need to keep in mind when driving in Israel:

  • You need to have a valid driver’s license from your own country. You’re not required to have an international driver’s license. On the other hand, an international driver’s license makes a nice souvenir of your car rental trip.
  • When renting a car, the driver must have a valid driver's license and should be over 21 years old.
  •  All passengers of the car should wear their seatbelts. Toddlers and babies should be strapped in the right seats.
  • All cars are required to have a yellow reflective vest. You need to put on the vest when getting out of your vehicle on the side of the road.
  • Unless there’s a separate light for right turns, you should never turn right on a red light, as it is strictly prohibited. Large intersections allocate separate lanes for right-turning cars.
  • There are street lights that photograph license plates, record speeders and send tickets by mail, so you should always keep an eye on your speed when you’re driving in Israel. Highway speed limit is 90 km/p/hr. In urban areas, the speed limit is 50 km/p/hr.
  • Don’t talk on your mobile phone without a hands-free system.
  • Parking on blue and white entails a parking fee. Parking on red and white is prohibited. Most parking lots charge by the hour. Parking lots in malls sometimes refund the parking fee if you present proof that you shopped at their center. This is done by showing a receipt from the shopping center.
  • If you encounter an accident, call the police by dialing 100 then call your rental agency. If your car was towed away, just call 106 and they’ll redirect you.

Several More Tips for Driving in Israel

  • If you have a valid license and your car is licensed, you can bring it to Israel for up to 1 year. You don’t need to worry about deposits or custom duties, as there are none.
  • However, the cost, paperwork and stress of sending your car back home is something you don’t want to deal with.
  • Renting a car is certainly the most cost-effective and more practical option when you are in Israel. We have a large fleet of rental cars for you to pick from.
